I keep thinking about this and my brain isn't letting me get over it. I cannot fathom how Donovan McNabb honestly didn't know that there was only one overtime in regular season NFL games. Somehow Donovan McNabb can understand a complex professional football playbook but he doesn't know of the most basic rules in the game? Even though ties are rare, there was a playoff game a few years ago between the Rams and Panthers that went to double overtime. Donovan must not have had his TV on that day, or during that whole postseason.
I keep hearing how this is Andy Reid's fault for not letting his team know that there was only one overtime. Are you serious? I think Andy Reid just assumed his team wasn't full of a bunch of ten year olds. To try and cut McNabb some slack I asked my wife about the rule. My wife probably couldn't tell you how many yards an offensive holding penalty is but even she said to, "if it ends isn't it a tie?"
As I watched the coverage of this I was shocked at how people weren't making a bigger deal out of this. I understand not all athletes are scholars but c'mon, this is ridiculous. He's not a rookie, he's been in the league for what, 9 years now?
This would be Ryan Howard coming to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning with the bases loaded in a tie game and saying "well, i don't really need a hit here because i'd be fine with a tie."
This is Tiger Woods giving himself a gimme when he leaves a birdie put three inches short on the 72nd hole of a tourney because he figured he didn't have to tap it in.
Ok, I'm exhausting this issue, I admit, but this could have altered the game. I didn't get to see overtime because I'm poor and I don't have sunday ticket and FOX could only show the game until 3:15 but if Donovan late in the overtime chose not to force a third down when they were driving because he thought it'd be better to pin them deep with a punt and regroup for double OT then that is not ok.
I guess I just can't wait until there's a best damn countdown of the stupidest moments in sports so I can tune in for the top 10 and see his press conference again.
